It is now 4:45 am Sunday in Beijing, and I am finally posting to the blog about our adventures from Saturday. It was a very busy day....
We went to Tienanmen Square, the Forbidden City, to a local Peking Duck restaurant for lunch, to the Children's Hope offices for orientation, and finally to the Great Wall. It was another damp, cold day, but it was still great. We never could have imagined what it would be like to be here, especially climbing the Great Wall.
Lunch was very good, we had a large variety of traditional Chinese food, including roasted duck. We were a little nervous, but tried to taste at least a little bit of everything. We had a really nice time at the Great Wall also, however, we got there a little late and didn't have as much time as we would have liked. Also, the weather wasn't great, it had snowed, and so the stairs (which are already quite treacherous) were very slick. It was quite a letdown after we climbed and climbed and thought we had made it to the top, only to look out the other side of the landing, and see it continue on into the fog. That's were I stopped, and Shawn went up quite a bit further. And the hardest part is not going up, it's coming down. The stairs are SO steep and so uneven, you have to be careful with each step.
Finally, last night, 0ur whole group took a walk down to the market a few blocks down from the hotel. Many were adventurous and decided to try the food from the street vendors. We went along with two other families to Pizza Hut. It was delicious! I was so hungry....and Pizza hut here is practically gourmet!
I am up now because I'm to excited and nervous to sleep. Today we will meet Jessie, our coordinator, in the lobby at 8am to leave for the airport to go to Henan province. We will arrive there at noon, and just found out yesterday that we will be meeting Tyler at around 4:30. I have been awake since around 3 am just trying to imagine what it will be like. We still have a lot to do before we leave this morning, so I'm off to get ready. We will post pictures of Tyler as soon as we can!
